The Land of the Tlingit

We are located on the current and ancestral lands Tlingit, who have been living here since time immemorial. Kich
xáan (Ketchikan) remains the territory of the Taant’a Kwáan (Sea Lion Tribe) of the Tongass Tlingit. We are grateful for the opportunity to live and learn here in mutual respect and appreciation.

A land acknowledgment helps you recognize the Indigenous peoples whose traditional lands we stand upon. Speaking the words of a land acknowledgement creates a space of honoring, respecting and making visible the generations of Indigenous peoples that came before you. It is an expression of respect appropriate for gatherings at schools, organizations, institutions, businesses, conferences, and communities, both where you live and where you travel to.

It is important to have a strong understanding of the history of the land we are on. This land acknowledgment will change as our relationship with the land deepens, as we gain knowledge about Indigenous histories, experiences, and perspectives on this land.

Southern Southeast Alaska is home to three First Nations: the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian. The Collective is located in Ketchikan, on Revillagigedo Island. There are two federally recognized tribes on this island, the Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) and the Organized Village of Saxman.
