Petersburg museum opens first pride art show

An exhibit of paintings, photos, sculpture and paper art celebrating Pride Month opens in Petersburg tonight, Friday, June 28 at the Clausen Museum.

Here in Petersburg, this is the first year for this show, dreamed up by museum director Lizzie Walsh along with Annette Bennett, director of Working Against Violence for Everybody, or WAVE. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Walsh about the exhibit, which she’s hoping will become an annual event.

Leigh Armstrong spoke with Nils Davis and Skipper Stovall of Skagway. To welcome all LGBTQ people, Nils Davis and Skipper Stovall opened the doors of their business, Bites on Broadway, for a pride meet and greet on May 4.

Davis and Stovall said the event is for people in town to come out and meet other LGBT- and LGBT-friendly members of the community in a safe space.

Wrangell group in solidarity with global transgender day of remembrance

Yesterday was the global day of remembrance for those murdered from anti-transgender hate crimes. 25 transgender people have been murdered so far in 2017 in the U.S., according to research from the Human Rights Campaign and these numbers are increasing.

Juneau Assembly passes long-awaited equal rights ordinance

The ordinance was adopted by the Juneau Assembly in an 8-1 vote. The ordinance protects against discrimination based on gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation.

LGBTQ community grieves while celebrating Pride

Members of Juneau’s LGBTQ community celebrated the beginning of Pride week with a picnic at a local park. The festive mood was darkened by collective mourning for victims of a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando early Sunday.

Transgender support group starts in Juneau

LGBTQ support group meets in Ketchikan

Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer people are gaining more rights and acceptance throughout the country. Same-sex marriage is now legal in a majority of states, including Alaska. While support may be rising nationwide, there aren’t any official LGBTQ non-profits or advocacy groups in Ketchikan. But there are unofficial support systems. One such group is called “Transgendered Ketchikan.”
