Kenai Peninsula teachers allege censorship of books with LGBTQ themes

Teachers at Kalifornsky Beach Elementary School in Soldotna were told to temporarily stop teaching a book after a school administrator found it age inappropriate. Separately, the district withheld books about sexuality from the Seward High School library that it deemed controversial.

New ‘Dear Kin’ exhibit celebrates Indigenous members of the LGBTQ+ community in Alaska

A new exhibit “Dear Kin,” celebrating Indigenous members of the LGBTQ+ community in Alaska, opened this month at the Anchorage Museum. 

Filmmaker Alexis Sallee said she hopes viewers can learn and find comfort in the exhibit, knowing that there is a place for LGBTQ+ people in Alaska Native culture. The videos feature Native individuals who identify as trans, two-spirit, non-binary or gay, talking about their experiences.

Here and Queer: Zine highlights Southeast Alaska LGBTQ community

Read (and listen!) A zine centered on the LGBTQ community in Southeast Alaska started up this year, releasing its second issue this month. It’s essentially a small-scale version of a magazine, filled with queer artwork, writing and resources. As the pages of the project begin to unfold, the group behind the zine say they hope to show LGBTQ people in the area that they’re not alone.

Skagway hosts a drag show at Dedman Stage to celebrate Pride month

Read (and listen!) Skagway is breaking out the drag costumes and rolling out the red carpet this weekend for its first major Pride event of the month. Gigi Monroe and her Juneau-based drag troop The Kings and Queens of Juneau Drag will host the proceedings at the Dedman Stage at Seven Pastures on Saturday night. It’s all part of Skagway’s celebration of Pride month.

Sitka ushers in pride month festivities with LGBTQ2+ art show

With Pride month in full swing, Sitka’s own LGBTQ2+ community is set to celebrate with a slew of events under the theme “Building Belonging”. On June 20th Harrigan Centennial Hall will be hosting an art show for local artists focusing on the past and present of queer history. KCAW’s Brooke Schafer spoke with local organizer Claire Sanchez about the show.
